History:

Le Triomphant is the lead boat of the French Navy’s Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarines, commissioned in 1997. It represents the backbone of French’s sea-based nuclear deterrent. The submarine measures approximately 138 meters long and displaces about 14,335 tons submerged.

Le Triomphant carries 16 M45 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, with nuclear warheads designed to provide French with a credible and survivable second-strike capability. The class combines stealth, endurance, and advanced sonar and fire control systems. These submarines continue to play a central role in French’s nuclear strategy, ensuring strategic deterrence in the 21st century.
